AF Nikkor 50 mm F/one.viii D FX Lens on the D3400

Hello,

Total beginner. Last calendar week I purchased my first DSLR (The Nikkon D3400)- with it came a standard 18-55mm Kit lens. I was told I should also investigate the possibility of purchasing a prime lens. I did a bit of inquiry and decided to become a 50mm. I went with the "AF Nikkor 50 mm F/1.eight D FX" from Amazon. It arrived yesterday and when attaching it I was greeted with the message "incompatible lens" in every mode. I switched to transmission and the lens worked fine. I have googled around a lot and deceit observe a reason why it would but work in transmission. I guess it is not a massive issue as I will need to learn in manual anyway but I am looking at purchasing a 35 mm also and I would like it to exist compatible with all the modes on my camera.

Thank you for taking the time to read and apologies if I have missed something obvious.

PS - I take tried locking the aperture to the highest setting and it still wont work in any other fashion simply manual.

Thank you,

Daniel

Your camera does not accept an internal focusing motor and the D lenses don't take motors either. Y'all need a G lens.

Howdy, it is not uniform with your camera.  This lens needs a screw-driven bodies such every bit D7200 and above.

For your camera, you need a newer 50mm f/1.8G lens - discover the 'Thousand' at the end, it will piece of work on your camera in all modes.

You could return information technology in commutation for it. However, G version costs a bit more than.

This http://world wide web.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm is from a man who isn't universally esteemed on here, simply it is a fairly comprehensive and most totally correct treatment of Nikon lens compatibility.

Hullo, Daniel:

Commencement with the D3400, Nikon removed the ability for the body to meter with AF-D lenses. Interesting move every bit all entry level bodies beginning with the D40 - D3300 metered with merely fine with these lenses. I have used a couple with my D40. Focus has always been manual as mentioned above which can be a fun change of pace.

You are not doing annihilation wrong. The only way to meter the D3400 & AF-D lenses is in M mode.

Re: AF Nikkor 50 mm F/1.8 D FX Lens on the D3400

For that camera yous'll need the 50mm 1.8 G.  No "D" series lenses will work.   It'south super unfortunate that many people buy the Nikon photographic camera like you lot did, and the 5xxx series too and then observe that many older (and crawly) lenses are incompatible.

In many means these "entry level" cameras are a false economy and I wish this was clearer considering they are great in many ways - but for the person who bought it on a budget it'south hard to grow past standard lens on a budget.

Hi, Andrew:

You're welcome. Information technology is easy to miss.

I believe they too removed the" ultra sound sensor cleaning" function from the D3400. The D3300 sounds like a adept deal to me.

Wow.  I didn't know they had gone another pace further.   Has the same thing happenend in the 5xxx range?

This whole matter is a pet peeve of mine that I talk (rant?) most hither so I'm not out of engagement on this additional change.

I guess bottom line is that there are now 3 means in which entry level Nikons don't support lens astern compatibility:

1) autofocus (lack of spiral drive)

two) This D series metering issue

3) concrete reader of older transmission focus lens aperture rings.

In my mind the all-time cameras to buy on a budget are (depending on the budget)

D90, D7100, D700, D3s

although the D90 too does not back up indicate iii and I guess I should reconsider the D7200 over the D7100.

Stick with Manual mode.  More command...Also, you should've got the 50mm i.8G.  This one is the new version of the ane.8D.  Better technology.

Re: AF Nikkor 50 mm F/ane.eight D FX Lens on the D3400

I would exchange your lens for the 35 one.8G DX lens.  I think you will notice it more of an all around useful lens than the 50mm on your crop body.

Entry level buyers are rewarded past compatibility with the fabulous AF-P budget lenses.

An ability sadly lacking in earlier cameras similar the nearly of the ones  y'all mention .

Unfortunate given thei lenses are demonstrably fast, quiet and with precipitous autofocus wrapped in a very lightweight package.

This is incorrect. Sorry for being negative.

I take a D3400 and the 50mm 1.8D.

They do piece of work together, only only in manual mode. For the reasons almost metering and the demand to focus manually using the ring on the lens as described in this thread.

Re: AF Nikkor l mm F/i.8 D FX Lens on the D3400

Your camera has no information about F value. I have too Canon 400D with aforementioned 50mm and 1.8F as Nikon D3400, just Canon can photo with ane/l with ISO 400 in my room. Nikon CAN'T.
